Cooking isn’t always about using a recipe—sometimes it’s just about knowing the right formula. When you’re staring into your fridge, wondering what to make, you don’t need a recipe…you just need a foundational formula!
Here’s how to turn whatever you’ve got into a great meal—quickly!
Step 1: Pick a Base (Carbs or Veggies)
Start with something that gives the meal structure:
✔ Rice, pasta, quinoa, couscous, tortillas
✔ Potatoes, sweet potatoes, canned beans like Garbanzo
✔ Leafy greens, cauliflower, zucchini noodles
Examples: Leftover rice? That’s fried rice just waiting to happen. Half a bag of spinach? Toss it into eggs or saute it in lemon juice, red pepper flakes, garlic and olive oil. Extra salad from last night’s dinner? Stuff it into a toasted pita for a fabulous veggie sandwich!
Step 2: Add a Protein (If You Have It)
This is optional, but if you’ve got it, use it:
✔ Chicken, beef, shrimp, tofu, eggs
✔ Canned tuna or beans like Garbanzo, black, pinto, etc.
✔ Leftover meat (like rotisserie chicken or hamburger patties)
Examples: Scramble eggs into rice and veggies for an instant stir-fry. Shred last night’s chicken and add into tacos or a soup. Chop burger patties mixed with pickles/onions/Thousand Island dressing and stuff into a grilled tortilla for an easy Big Mac inspired sandwich.
Step 3: Bring in Flavor (Season it up!)
Here’s where it all comes together. No sauce? Make one in seconds:
✔ Asian-style: Soy sauce + garlic + honey
✔ Mediterranean: Olive oil + lemon + oregano
✔ Mexican-inspired: Lime + cumin + chili powder
✔ Creamy & comforting: Butter (melted or browned) + grated cheese
Examples: Mix Farro with olive oil, garlic, and chili flakes for a five-minute meal. Drizzle soy sauce and sesame oil over veggies and rice for an easy stir-fry. Toss pasta noodles with some browned or melted butter and mix in grated Parmesan cheese for a quick ultra-comfort meal.
Step 4: Add Texture (Crunch, Creaminess, or Freshness)
A last-minute addition makes it feel intentional:
✔ Nuts or seeds for crunch
✔ Grated cheese or avocado slices for richness
✔ Fresh herbs, lemon juice, or pickled onions to brighten it up
Example: A handful of rough chopped peanuts takes a basic noodle dish to the next level. A squeeze of lemon makes any dish feel fresh and zingy. Grated cheese is total perfection on almost anything!Â
Final Touch: Assemble, Season & Adjust
Put it all together, taste, add more of your favorite seasonings and adjust. Need more flavor? Add salt, an acid such as lemon juice or zest, or spices. Too dry? Add a little olive oil, butter or broth. Feeling like it just needs a little something? Throw some herbs on top for garnish and flavor.
The more you experiment the easier (and faster!) it’ll be to throw together delicious meals using nothing but your instincts and some random ingredients that you already have in the house!
